Shaker Step Stool

Wood Species
Hickory, Ash
Joinery
Mortise and Tenon, Dovetails
Finish
Shellac

Built at the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute, this compact step stool is a study in Shaker utility and proportion. Hand-cut through dovetails join the top to the legs, while a wedged mortise-and-tenon stretcher locks the whole structure against racking.

Arched cutouts lighten the feet and allow the stool to sit cleanly on uneven floors, and a central handhold pierced through the top makes it effortless to carry from room to room.
