This was my second project at the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute. What began as a compact hanging wall cabinet evolved into an exploration of surface, shadow, and contrast—featuring shaped, proud through dovetails and a geometric inlay across the door.
A few weeks before starting the build, I came across the geometric pattern in a Guardian article and knew immediately that I wanted to translate it into timber. The oak carcass was darkened using iron acetate and India ink to cause the drawer front and door panel stand out.
Because I was living in a rented flat at the time and could not hang the cabinet on a wall, I also built a companion cherry bookshelf designed specifically to house it.
